10 All-Natural Supplements to Consider

1. Un-refined Coconut Oil: is a superfood! Add it regularly to your dog’s meals to help increase nutrient absorption, contains powerful antibacterials that help fight infections, helps with arthritis, preventing yeast infections, helps with skin and coat health and can even help wounds heal when applied topically.

2. A Powder Multi-Vitamin: in commercial diets “balanced and complete” diet simply means that they met minimum health standards. The process of making kibble kills almost all vitamins and minerals and that greasy film kibble leaves on your hand – yeah, that is the artificial spray-on vitamins and minerals. I highly suggest a holistic and all-natural supplement that does NOT contain brewers yeast and other un-healthy / processed ingredients or preserving chemicals. Powder form is best! 3. Glucosamine: many people don’t start adding this until their dog is deemed a “senior” but it is much more effective when given over a lifetime. It is vital for joint health which is important for preventing injuries from high impact activities. I would suggest starting a joint health supplement when your dog is 16 months to 2 years old and rotating regularly for the life of your dog.

 4. Turmeric: contains a compound called curcumin – which is essentially its active ingredient. Curcumin has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, wound healing and more! This is great for dogs to have daily but especially for post surgeries or injuries, helping arthritis and dogs on steroids’ or chemo.

My favorite way to feed this to my dogs is by making turmeric paste! Here is the recipe:

 5. Green-Lipped Mussels: are rich in glycosaminoglycans (or GAGs). An important GAG found in green lipped mussels is chondroitin sulfate. And this is an important supplement for dogs with arthritis pain. Your dog’s joints are enclosed in a capsule. This capsule is like a water balloon and it changes in pressure to help your dog’s joints absorb shock. This protects the joints from war and tear. Chondroitin strengthens your dog’s joint capsules … and this allows them to hold more water. More water = more shock absorption = less wear and tear on the joints.

6. Pure Pumpkin: Is great for digestive support as it is high in fiber. It helps with upset tummies, firming up stool, and curing constipation. Rotating pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin regularly into your dog’s diet can be extremely beneficial!

7. Slippery Elm: The digestive wonder herb that is slippery elm is great for diarrhea, constipation and coughing. The inner bark of the slippery elm is not only packed with nutrients like vitamins A, B complex, C, K, calcium, magnesium and sodium, but because of its lubricating and anti-inflammatory properties, it is also a well-known soother of the digestive and respiratory systems

8. Apple Cider Vinegar: Organic, raw and unfiltered. This stuff is great being added to your dog’s diet to help with their immune system, kidney function and cholesterol. Use a 1/2TBSP per 25 pounds of body weight. You can also use it topically for itchy skin (a 50/50 ACV + H20 solution)It’s an all-natural & amazing ear cleaner All-Natural Tick and Flea Repellent

9. CBD / Hemp Oil: Is a great supplement for inflammation, pain relief, arthritis, tumors and cancer, seizures, intestinal inflammation like IBD and poor appetite. Only use ORGANIC full spectrum hemp oil (THC is toxic for dogs). There are CBD treats available but liquid form is best for consumption and effectiveness. The 3 brands I love are Bixbi Pet, Saving Grace CBD, and Only Natural Pet

10. Bone Broth: is a budget friendly way to add protein, hydration and numerous health benefits to your dog’s diet! Bone broth benefits include:

  • Joint health: Bone broth is loaded with nutrients such as glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid, which help to promote collagen growth. It’s one of the biggest benefits of bone broth for dogs! Collagen is literally the cushion at the ends of your dog’s bones; the main protein found in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. As dogs start to lose some of that collagen – usually down to aging – joint pain can develop. Adding bone broth to a puppies diet will help aid with the growth of healthy bones, and for older dogs, aid as an anti-inflammatory pain relief, as well as helping to rebuild connective tissues.
  • Enhanced gut health: The gelatin found in bone broth can help to soothe and heal the digestive tract, making it a useful food for dogs with digestive issues such as inflammatory bowel disease or pancreatitis. If your dog gets a tummy upset, feeding them bone broth can help to repair their stomach lining, keep them hydrated and promote a healthy gut.
  • Boosted immune system: The vitamins, minerals, and amino acids found in bone broth can help to support a healthy immune system in dogs.
  • Increased hydration: If your dog is prone to dehydration or even diarrhea, bone broth can be a good source of fluids. It’s also a great option to offer when your dog is sick or recovering from surgery.
  • Improved coat and skin health: Bone broth is a rich source of collagen, which is a protein that is essential for maintaining healthy skin and hair. It’s also a good source of moisture, which can help to keep a dog’s skin and coat hydrated, preventing dryness and flaking, whilst also soothing irritated and itchy skin. The amino acids found in bone broth also help to strengthen and repair damaged hair, making it an excellent supplement for dogs post-pregnancy or that have recently undergone periods of extreme stress.

When adding bone broth to your dog’s diet, it’s important to use a high-quality selection of bones (knuckle bones and joints are especially great because they contain more gelatin) and to avoid any ingredients that may be harmful to dogs. You can make your own bone broth at home using a slow cooker or pressure cooker or if you purchase bone broth at the store, make sure it is Low-Sodium.
